Matt Berninger from The National and Brent Knopf from Menomena are joining forces on a new musical venture. The project is called EL VY (pronounced “el vie”), and they will have an album – Return to the Moon – out October 30, to be followed by a tour.
The group has already released a music video for the title track, the extensively parenthetical’d “Return to the Moon (Political Song for Didi Bloome to Sing, with Crescendo).” They will crisscross the Unites States of America in November, before heading to Europe for December. Berninger sounds like Berninger on the song they’ve released, which is to say his voice is deep and mournful. Even though the music is a bit poppier than what The National usually does, you just can’t take that dirge-like quality out of Berninger’s voice.
“This record is more autobiographical than anything else I’ve written, but the details aren’t true. It’s written in the voices of a few invented characters, composites of different people—myself, my wife, and other people I was thinking about,” said Berninger. The National have a fairly substantial devoted following, and those people will probably follow Berninger over to EL VY to see what he and Knopf have in store for us. So far, they have our attention.
