Coming off his dominating, if not boring, victory over Manny Pacquiao in May, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., continues to ride high with unwavering confidence. During an appearance at the ESPN Deportes studios in Los Angeles to promote his upcoming fight with Andre Berto, he was given a list of 10 all-time great boxers and asked to rank them with his top five.
First off, before he gets into the rankings, he wants to make sure we all know that he respects every boxer that was listed. After all, they were the guys who paved the way for him. But, of course, at the end of the day, he places himself No. 1 overall. He then went on to state his reasons why, and I’ll let you guess whether he spoke in the third person.
Here was Mayweather’s top five:
1. Floyd Mayweather
2. Roberto Durán
3. Pernell Whitaker
4. Julio César Chávez
5. Muhammad Ali
The most interesting omission: Rocky Marciano, who was undefeated in his career with a record of 49-0, a record that continues to stand to this day.
Mayweather (48-0) will attempt to match Marciano’s record of dominance on Sept. 12, when he is scheduled to fight Berto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. There, Mayweather will defend his welterweight world titles in the sixth and final fight he has under contract with Showtime and CBS.
