You can add Kevin Smith to the list of fanboys who are totally down with the idea of Ronda Rousey playing Captain Marvel. The Clerks and Tusk director threw his support behind the UFC champion without hesitation, proving Rousey has a wide base of support across the geekosphere for cinching the role. Via TMZ:
“See her in that picture? Come on, we don’t even need to think on this one, there’s an image and she looks amazing. Lord knows, she’s one of the only people who would play a superhero that could actually beat the shit out of somebody. I would like to see it happen. Seems like she’s got a good head on her shoulders. She followed her dream and holy s**t she’s an asskicker, man. If that doesn’t sound like a superhero to me, I don’t know what is.”
During her recent Reddit AMA, Rousey casually mentioned she’d be down for playing the role of the female superhero, currently penciled in by Marvel Studios to hit theaters in November 2018. As soon as she posted that desire to the net, the internet started churning out amazing fanart of Ronda as Marvel.
Ronda’s got some stiff competition; Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron are just two of the big names currently in the running for the role, and they have the advantage of actually being actresses. Ronda Rousey has some roles under her belt, but would Marvel risk its streak of good movies on a relatively raw newcomer who has never had more than five minutes of dialog in a film?
Still, the power of Rousey is hard to ignore. Captain Marvel is one of those superheroes non-comic-book fans don’t give a damn about, but they give a damn about Rousey. For many, Rousey’s potential involvement in the project is the first they’ve heard of the character, and the only reason they’re interested in it at all. So she’s got that — and Kevin Smith’s approval — going for her, which is nice.
