It’s been a really weird preseason for the Washington Redskins, especially with regards to starting quarterback Robert Griffin III. The Redskins’ signal caller – who claimed that he is the best quarterback in the NFL – kept getting hammered during Washington’s second preseason game against the Detroit Lions. It was obvious that he was banged up, but he stayed in the game, kept getting plastered, and eventually had to be taken out.
It looked like Griffin was going to be fine to finish out the preseason, though, and an independent neurologist cleared him on Thursday. However, that decision was overturned the next day, and now the Redskins are reportedly planning on having backup quarterback Kirk Cousins start the next two preseason games and the team’s season opener according to ESPN.

Cousins has thrown the most passes for the Redskins this preseason, and has gone 20-for-26 with 245 yards and a touchdown against Cleveland and Detroit. He has a few NFL starts under his belt, as Cousins has started nine games in Washington, but the team is 2-7 in those games. For his career, Cousins has completed 59 percent of his passes and has thrown 18 touchdowns to 19 interceptions.
As for Griffin, ESPN reports that he needs to be sidelined for at least another week before he is reevaluated. There’s no word on whether Griffin will get the starting job back if he’s cleared by the time the regular season starts.
