Serena Williams had a bit of a scare on Friday, but ended up taking down fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the third round of the U.S. Open, 3-6 7-5 6-0. The No. 1 women’s player in the world, and possibly of all-time, will move on to take on another American in the fourth round.
But before she does that, let’s take a second to just appreciate how amazing Serena Williams is at tennis. The highlight of her match against Mattek-Sands came when she smashed a winner and watched while falling into a full split. Here it is from a back angle:
As we learned earlier this year during the photo shoot for her recent New York Magazine cover story, doing a split is pretty easy for Williams. Still, doing one during a match while you’re watching a cross court winner is completely insane, and it’s just another thing that we can add to the lengthy highlight tape that we’ll make at the end of Williams’ amazing career.
Williams’ quest for the 22nd Grand Slam of her career, along with her attempt at winning each of the four major tournaments in a calendar year for the first time, continues with her match against No. 19 Madison Keys. Hopefully she’ll do something as awesome as her split winner in that match as well.
