In 1984, A Nightmare On Elm Street hit theaters, quickly taking the horror world by storm and introducing everyone to a different type of horror movie icon with the burnt up, child murdering boogeyman known as Freddy Krueger. Quickly leading to a sizable franchise, Freddy Krueger proceeded to dominate the pop culture world throughout the majority of the ’80s.
In 2010, New Line Cinema aimed at recapturing this glory by rebooting ANOES with Oscar-nominated actor Jackie Earle Haley donning the hat, sweater, and gloves. Unfortunately, the movie was released to poor reviews and slim returns at the box office, but that hasn’t deterred the studio as recent news finds another reboot in their sights.
The original Freddy, Robert Englund, spoke with Red Carpet News TV about the rumored project, and he believes New Line isn’t planning to remake the original film again. Instead, Englund speculated that the studio is planning to remake the third, and most popular film in the franchise, Dream Warriors. The actor referenced a rumor he heard that actress Tuesday Knight was in recent talks to appear in the new film. Knight took over the role of Kristen Parker — which was originally played by Patricia Arquette in Dream Warriors — to star in A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.
Given the referential awareness common in many horror films, Englund posed the idea of Knight returning to play Kristen Parker’s mother as sort of a wink and a nod to the original movie. Englund also said that while he couldn’t return as Freddy, he could possibly play an “elderly dream expert” which sorta sounds similar to the character he recently played in Fear Clinic.
Currently, there is no real information that supports this speculation, but the concept of a new take on Dream Warriors sounds pretty neat. If Knight returns for such a remake, maybe Heather Langenkamp would also agree to making a cameo. Hell, if we’re bringing people attached to the original 1987 movie back for another go-round, let’s bring Dokken back for the soundtrack and just have Frank Darabont write the damn thing. I mean, at this point, that man deserves some sort of redemption.
