Here is everything we know for certain about Steven Soderbergh’s latest HBO project, Mosaic:
- It is being made by Steven Soderbergh.
- It is called Mosaic.
- It will be on HBO.
Beyond that, nothing but rumor and speculation, which brings us to this new story from Entertainment Weekly. According to their sources, the project might star Sharon Stone and, most interestingly, might include multiple endings, with viewers getting to choose which one they want to see using an app. When they reached Soderbergh for comment, he wasn’t exactly denying it, either.
“I believe the good people at HBO are genuinely enthusiastic about Mosaic for two reasons: First, it represents a fresh way of experiencing a story and sharing that experience with others; second, it will require a new Emmy category, and we will be the only eligible nominee.”
Soderbergh attempting some wild avant garde storytelling technique is actually kind of par for the course at this point, and inventing your own genre to guarantee an Emmy win is both a little genius and a little diabolical, even if he is joking here. (Probably?) But the real story here is that a CYOA trend in television would make things pretty interesting, even if it is coming a little too late for me to force Mad Men to grant my one simple wish.
