Way, way, way back on Wednesday, June 12, the NHL hosted Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks, and after what felt like an eternity, the ‘Hawks wrapped up a 4-3 triple overtime victory. Obviously, that’s a lot of action for any announcer to handle without sounding repetitive and unoriginal, but fortunately for hockey fans and NBC, Mike “Doc” Emrick is anything but repetitive and unoriginal.
Always the fan favorite, Emrick has a special way of coining new phrases and keeping his broadcasts colorful, so one bright Redditor decided to keep track of every different synonym that Emrick used for “pass” during that incredibly long affair last week*.
My favorites are “fiddles it”, “wanded it” and “plunged it”. That last one is mainly because I have the mind of a 10-year old and “plunge” is one of those words that just makes me laugh every time I hear it. Like snatch and hatchet and jugs.
Unfortunately, there’s no video mash-up of Emrick’s calls yet, so you’ll have to settle for this video of him calling every Bruins goal from the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.
*Originally, Yahoo!’s Harrison Mooney Tweeted that this list was from Game 2 and Deadspin also reported it as such, but Redditors pointed out that it was Game 1. And if I’ve learned anything in my short time on this crazy Internet, it’s that you always trust the Redditor.
