Even though about half of Weezer’s fanbase disavows everything except perhaps the first two or three albums, Rivers Cuomo and company are still making music. Their most recent album, Everything Will Be Alright in the End, was actually kind of okay, and a bit of a step up from other recent offerings. They have been teasing a new single to be released October 26, but before that, they played said new single a couple times, and you can listen to it now.

The song is called “Thank God for Girls,” because Weezer has never resisted being parodies of themselves. It’s a live recording from a concert, so the sound isn’t great, and so it probably isn’t fair to assess the sound of the song based on this. However, it does sound different from Weezer, and kind of interesting.
Of course, musicianship has never really been the problem with Weezer, whose songs often live and die on Cuomo’s lyrics, which can toggle from “tolerable” to “terrible” from song to song. The bits of lyrics that can be plucked out of this song aren’t encouraging, but if you’ve been putting up with Cuomo for this long, nothing he does is likely to drive you away. “Thank God for Girls,” upon early assessment, may not bring those old fans back, but it may make them ask, “Huh, that’s Weezer?”
