Netflix’s plan for world domination has added yet another big name to its roster. Selena Gomez and her new series 13 Reasons Why has been locked up by the streaming service. In addition to starring in the series, Gomez will also produce it, and Pulitzer Prize-winner Brian Yorkey created the series and also wrote the pilot. Anonymous Content, who were behind True Detective, Mr. Robot and more, will be one of the show’s executive producers.
13 Reasons Why is based on Jay Asher’s best-selling Young Adult book of the same name, and is about a high school student who commits suicide. Gomez will play said student who, prior to committing suicide, leaves a box of cassette tapes to a classmate, along with instructions to pass a tape along to 12 other people. Each tape lays out how that person contributed to her death. Ouch.
Netflix has been spitting hot fire lately when it comes to producing its own content, creating a tidal wave of programming to follow in the foot steps of House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black with shows like Narcos, Daredevil, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Bloodline and more.
There’s no word on a release date for the show. Gomez recently released her second solo album, Revival, and will be appearing in the upcoming sequel to Neighbors.
