Most artists write about their exes in their work. (Despite what you may have heard, it’s not something that’s unique to Taylor Swift.) So, when clearly the greatest love of all-time, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, ended sometime last year, it stood to reason that it would probably fall into both of their work. Thankfully, for us, both of them have grown musically into artists we are excited to hear from. But for Justin, it’s not so easy.
He sat down with Access Hollywood for an exclusive interview, and revealed in the conversation that he still harbors bad feelings over the way things ended:
“It was really tough. I don’t know if I’m over it yet,” he added. “I think that I’m definitely in another place and I think we’ve definitely went our separate ways. I love her and I want her to be awesome, but there are things that remind me of her.”
Ironically enough, he knows that he was an unlikable brat during their relationship, and even wrote a song that didn’t ultimately end up on his new album, Purpose.
“Yeah, I wrote a song [that] didn’t make the album, it was called ‘If I Would Have Met You In 5 Years,'” Justin revealed. “How true is that? How many people go through life and end up meeting someone and it feels so right, but it’s just the wrong time? So many people can relate to that.”
That’s a fair, introspective take to have on your life. When you get old enough to realize that you are your most unlikable at 19 years old, you just get thankful that you didn’t screw up any more than you already did. Thankfully for Bieber, he says the two keep in touch and “still respect each other.” Well, that’s better than how most of the general population feel about their respective exes, so congrats on actually being an adult. It’s something to be proud of.
