For many years, the subject of Carly Simon’s 1972 single “You’re So Vain” was a mystery to many fans. The song, ranked No. 82 on Billboard’s list of greatest songs of all time, is Carly’s biggest and most recognizable hit, leading the listeners to wonder who was so vain that they thought the song was about them. Simon kept the self-absorbed subject of the song secret for many years, only revealing publicly that the man she wrote about has the letters “A”, “E” and “R” in his name. The mystery lasted more than 40 years. Until this month.
In a November interview with People, Simon revealed that the subject of the second verse of the song was actor Warren Beatty, while creating another mystery by not revealing about whom the first and third verses are written. “I have confirmed that the second verse is Warren,” Simon says, “Warren thinks the whole thing is about him.” Her assumption is correct, as in a 2007 interview, Beatty was quoted saying, “Let’s be honest. That song is about me.” Sounds like a vain statement.
So while we still don’t know who had walked into a party like it was on a yacht or who flew their Learjet during an eclipse, we do know that Warren Beatty turned Carly Simon’s dreams into clouds in her coffee.
