Courtney Barnett Has Never Even Heard Her Fellow Grammy Nominees’ Music Before

Courtney Barnett’s debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, was one of the very best albums released this year, led by the excellent single “Pedestrian at Best,” and, rightfully, the Australian singer-songwriter has been nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy. While Barnett is known for something of a “slacker” vibe, she was still quite enthused for her nomination. What she was less enthused about, though, is her fellow nominees.

Now, that’s not to say that she has anything against James Bay, Sam Hunt, Tori Kelly, and Meghan Trainor — her fellow nominees. The truth is, she simply doesn’t have any thoughts on them at all.

“Yeah, I don’t know who they are. I listen to music when my friends recommend it to me, I don’t often just go out and buy a record because it was in a magazine or it was on a list or something. So, yeah, I probably won’t [listen to them]. I feel like there’s so much music in the world that I haven’t listened to yet that I want to listen to.”

Kudos to Barnett for not trotting out any clichés about how it is an honor to be nominated alongside such great artists, when the truth is she’s never even listened to them. Being perfectly honest, can you imagine Barnett listening to “All About That Bass” or… um… any of the songs by these other artists? While it is possible (people contain multitudes, you know), she said she’s been too busy listening to Sleater-Kinney.

Barnett’s taste in music is, evidently, as sharp as her own musical aptitude. She may not win the Best New Artist Grammy, and these other musicians surely have their own supporters, but, if nothing else, it seems clear Barnett will be just fine either way.
