The Netflix documentary series, Making A Murderer, has been a cultural phenomenon since its December release. If you’ve been living under a rock, the subject of the documentary is Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man who may have been framed for crimes he did not commit, not only once, but twice. The documentary has added fire to the discussion of policing in America in such a big way that the subjects of the documentary are now heavily publicized internet sensations, and its reach is so widespread that the White House must respond to a petition to pardon the crimes of Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey.
It seems that Dan Auerbach, the frontman for The Black Keys and his new blues-rock band, The Arcs, got caught up in the binging wave, as well. On Thursday, The Arcs released “Lake Superior,” a song that talks specifically about the Steven Avery criminal case and the twisted way the police and criminal justice system handled it. Auerbach’s vocals and the band behind him lead you down the track of disappointment that occurs “when the whole world is after you.” Auerbach’s writing and performance on the track is another sign that people from all walks of life are similarly distraught by the case that is the subject of Making A Murderer.
