Satire is sometimes hard to define. But like Justice Stewart’s observation about pornography, I know it when I see it. Unfortunately, some don’t. Many say satire is used to reveal subtext, and even the stupidity of a subject to an audience that wouldn’t normally take notice. The tools of satire are humor, exaggeration and ridicule in order to shine a light on its target. As we know, satire is generally at its strongest in political humor. What we have here, in a hilarious segment from Jimmy Kimmel, is the type of cutting satire that is so close to home it rings the doorbell and has a Trump sign to stick in your front lawn.
Kimmel sent Jake Byrd, one of the biggest Trump fans on his payroll to the Donald’s New Hampshire rally ahead of the republican primary. What we expect, of course, is an enthusiastic potentially well-meaning and joyful man who believes in making America great again. Surprisingly, his over-the-top rallying for Trump wasn’t fully embraced, nor totally pushed away by fellow attendees. What we got instead is a begrudging acceptance of Byrd’s antics, and potentially maybe even a few people wondering where this man’s mind was at, and why they were sitting so close to a maniac that’s going to vote exactly the same way they are.
