Lady Gaga is the latest musician to come out in support of Kesha with her contractual gridlock, as well as allegations she’s leveling at pop producer Dr. Luke. The Mother Monster defended Kesha in an Instagram post that encouraged her fans to stop “victim shaming.”
Gaga said that Kesha’s career being put on hold helps illustrate one of the reasons that women are reluctant to come forward about their own abuse.
“The very reason women don’t speak up for years is the fear that no one will believe them or their abuser has threatened their life or life of their loved ones/livelihood in order to keep their victim quiet and under control. What happened to Kesha has happened to many female artists, including myself, and it will affect her for the rest of her life.”
Lady Gaga has shared other posts in support of Kesha, including a photo of herself holding hands with Kesha captioned with the popular hashtag #FreeKesha. In this post, she addressed the idea of these victims immediately being painted as liars.
“No one needs to validate Kesha. Why is victim always the ‘liar’? Why do we let people in a position of power get away with behaving inhumanely? These guys hide behind the legal system and it’s their litigious behavior that is precisely what they use to rape these girls. ‘Give me what I want or else I will come after you’ and they have all the money and the resources to do it.”
Gaga previously addressed her own sexual abuse on the ARTPOP song “Swine.” While there was a previous attempt to connect this story to Dr. Luke, Gaga firmly denied he was the man who assaulted her. Meanwhile, the mega producer continues to defend himself by denying the accusations that he ever assaulted Kesha.
