Sometimes we get wind of movie rumors that sound so insane and ridiculous that there’s no way they could be true, and that has certainly been the case for 23 Jump Street. While it’s no surprise that both Sony Pictures and the stars of 21 and 22 Jump Street would want to go back to the nostalgia-filled parody well one more time – after all, the two films earned a combined $530 million worldwide – it is a little shocking that they’d want to do it as a crossover with a rebooted Men in Black franchise. At the very least, we wouldn’t expect Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill to be on board with such a bizarre story to close out a trilogy, but again – money.
And yet here we are, talking about the news that the 23 Jump Street/Men in Black crossover reportedly has a director targeted: James Bobin. According to Variety, the man who directed The Muppets “is in early talks” to replace Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the red hot director team behind the first two Jump Street films, as they’ve joined the Star Wars universe and will handle The Adventures of Young Han Solo (not the actual title, but it’d still make a billion dollars). If Bobin is indeed directing this untitled crossover, we’d also have to wonder if he’d be bringing Muppets into the story. Okay, maybe I’m not wondering as much as I’m praying.
While Variety reports that Sony has yet to greenlight 23 Jump Street, which became a hot topic after it was leaked in the infamous email hack, the studio is apparently “eyeing a June production start date,” which would make sense since both C-Tates and Hill have a whole lotta nothing in the works right now. The only thing left for the news cycle, then, would be the identities of the actors who will be playing the new Men In Black agents. Let’s just go ahead and assume that one of them will be Josh Gad, because it’s usually the safest bet in Hollywood.
