The phenomena that is “people trying to do whatever they can to get their hands on a baseball during a game” is one of the most wonderful things in sports. It makes no sense, but any time a baseball is hit into the stands – whether it be a foul ball or a dinger – everyone within 20 feet of the ball loses every single ounce of common decency and tries to fight for it. Adults fight with children, there are massive scrums, it’s really something incredible.
During Monday’s spring training game between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Chicago White Sox, we got to see one of these scrums take place. Mike Trout, as he’s wont to do, hit a home run, and understandably everyone went for the ball. This group featured a bunch of children and one adult man, who ended up grabbing a ball and walking away, proud of his success.
There’s just one problem: he didn’t actually pick up the ball that Trout hit. Instead, he picked up some ball that was just sitting on the ground and one of the children kicked on accident. So while he ran away with some random baseball, one of the kids on the ground managed to get a ball that came off of the bat of the best baseball player on Earth.
Better luck next time, adult baseball fan. As every baseball coach ever says: you have to keep your eye on the ball.
