The San Antonio Spurs have been the model of consistency and success for the last couple of decades. Basically, ever since Peter Holt assumed front-office duties and Gregg Popovich became the head coach (and, for a while, the GM) in the 1996-97 season.
On one of those fronts, the Spurs are going through a fairly significant change. Wednesday evening, the Spurs announced on their website that Holt was retiring, and that his wife, Julianna, was assuming both the CEO and Chairman roles. Peter Holt will, however, remain on the organization’s board of managers.
“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved over the last two decades,” Holt said in a statement. “The championships are wonderful, bringing new sports franchises to San Antonio is important, but the biggest accomplishment for me will always be the impact we’ve had in our community. The pride, support and love that our city has for the Spurs is truly amazing.”
Julianna Holt added in her own statement that “for many years” she had a “desire to take a more active role with Spurs Sports & Entertainment.” The Holts said they felt it was the “right time to make this transition.”
Under Holt’s watch, the Spurs won five NBA titles and made the playoffs in 19-straight season. This year, the ageless team is 54-10, the second-best record in the league behind only Golden State, and 30-0 at home.
While changes at the top are always interesting times for any organization, that the Spurs are literally keeping the front-office responsibilities in-house makes this about as seamless a transition as there is. And for a franchise that prides itself on continuity, this is certainly a logical move.
