There’s a movie coming out soon that’s called Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. I know this because the internet or the TV or some other visual or auditory message delivery system tells me every 7.6 seconds of every day.
Some people are very, very, very excited about this movie, and if you fall into that camp, boy do we have a story for you. It seems that there will be another version of Batman v. Superman that is rated R, features some sequences shot on 16mm film and a GoPro, and is (gulp) half an hour longer than the theatrical cut.
That’s right: There’s a three-hour version of Batman v. Superman coming soon (deep breaths, deep breaths). This “Ultimate Edition,” will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray at an unspecified later date. Director Zack Snyder expounded upon the added bonuses in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, noting that there will be plenty of footage cut from the theatrical release which further explains and begins to develop the upcoming Justice League movie. Snyder also detailed the rationale behind the “Ultimate Edition” getting slapped with an R-rating:
“The why of that is [the DVD version] is a half-hour longer, and some of that additional material is some of the stuff we took out for the rating. I was like, ‘Cool, I can put it back in for the director’s cut.’ There was nothing by design. This was the material I just put back in, and then when [the MPAA] looked at it again, they were like, ‘Oh, now the movie’s rated R.’ And, by the way, it’s not a hard R. There’s no nudity. There’s a little bit of violence. It just tips the scale.”
No word yet on whether Snyder will eventually go all Lord of the Rings on us and release a four-hour version somewhere down the road, but don’t be even slightly surprised if he does. Oh and also, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on Friday.
