Star Wars: The Force Awakens came soaring back into the public consciousness this week with word of deleted scenes and info on Blu-Ray and Digital HD availability. So now that we’re thinking about it, let’s talk about how it’s basically a remake of Episode IV, shall we?
A shot-by-shot comparison of the two movies as seen below (and edited by Zachary Antell) pretty much proves that director J.J. Abrams was indeed going for the remake vibe. And why shouldn’t he have? It’s not like a huge chunk of the core audience for The Force Awakens was alive when A New Hope came out. Sure, that group has had plenty of time to get into the original movies, but it stands to reason that its primary connection to the Star Wars canon comes from the prequels made by George Lucas last decade.
And that, dear fellow Star Wars fans, is not a good place to start.
Besides, even though it’s not difficult to trace the origin of these new characters back to the Luke and Leia and Han of A New Hope, enough new and original material and development went into The Force Awakens to ensure that Rey and Finn and even Kylo Ren have plenty of different, far-reaching territory to mine once Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII hits theaters next Christmas.
