It wasn’t a huge surprise that Wolverine shows up in X-Men Apocalypse, even if it’s only a cameo. After all, X-Men: Days of Future Past had him pulled out of the Potomac by the government, and they weren’t going to let that plot thread dangle. And it might be more important than just reminding people Hugh Jackman’s final snikt is coming next year.
Bryan Singer, the director of much of the X-Men franchise, broke out some details from the trailer for Empire, and had this to say about Wolverine’s appearance:
There’s something more pivotal that occurs with that. It hints to a sequence that again fits within the canon of all six movies, and the birth of a new direction.
That’s especially interesting as Singer rewrote the continuity of the movies with Days of Future Past, and rumors have been going around that after Jackman hangs up the claws, Fox wants to bring in X-23, Wolverine’s female clone, to take over the franchise. Or they may bring in Wolverine’s son Daken, who’s more of a bad guy, but would still be a good fit. It’s also worth noting that either the teenage X-Men find Wolverine while he’s still at the Weapon X facility, which seems likely because Col. Stryker will be reappearing, or at some other mutant holding facility.
Also remember that Mystique was pretending to be Stryker during Wolverine’s rescue. So either Wolvie was captured by somebody else in the intervening years, or she has something to do with his adamantium-plated bones. We’ll find out where Wolverine fits in all this sooner rather than later, as X-Men: Apocalypse arrives May 27.
