‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Will Introduce A New Threat After The Credits

The X-Men movies have shown a tendency to reward sticking around for the credits. The Wolverine had a post-credits sequence foreshadowing X-Men: Days of Future Past, and in turn that movie set up X-Men: Apocalypse after the credits rolled. And it appears X-Men: Apocalypse will be setting up not just Wolverine 3, but an entirely new threat, as well.

Collider asked producer Simon Kinberg if there would be a post-credits tag, and he acknowledged that yes, they’ve got a tease of Wolverine 3, but also a hint at a broader X-Men universe:

I mean certainly the Wolverine movie is related to what happens at the end of it, but there’s also another character that’s introduced, at least in name, in the tag and he could show up in any host of different X-Men films. Maybe a Gambit movie, maybe another X-Men movie.

It’s not quite clear who the “he” in question would be, although the mention of Gambit, a movie with some behind-the-scenes struggles, is interesting. It’s unlikely to be anybody from the Old Man Logan plotlines, as most of the film rights to the characters in that series belong to Marvel itself. Fox has also gone through a lot of X-Men villains at this point. It could also be a hero, but there aren’t a lot of major X-Men we haven’t seen already. That said, we know Cable will be showing up and we’ve yet to see notorious geneticist Mister Sinister, so we have options. We’ll find out just who’s next at bat May 27.
