Russell Westbrook’s Own Teammates Might Be His Harshest Fashion Critics

In addition to being one of, if not the, fiercest player in all of basketball, Russell Westbrook is also one of the most enigmatic. Royce Young of ESPN.com recently put together a list of 39 little-known facts about the Thunder guard that should transform even his most vehement detractors into fawning fans.

There’s all sorts of fascinating tidbits here about his life, like the fact that he was an honor student who earned a scholarship to attend Stanford before opting for UCLA, that he does everything else left-handed besides shoot a basketball, or that he’s a religiously-punctual person.

But not surprisingly, some of the most entertaining parts have to do with his sense of fashion. Russ never wears the same outfit twice (he gives them away afterward) and once sat next to Vogue editor Anna Wintour at Fashion Week in New York a few years back.

He’s often ridiculed for his bold ensembles in the media, but his teammates are apparently just as brutal about it in the locker room, if not more so:

His teammates often clown him for his outfits.

In January, Westbrook wore a wood-brimmed hat and a poncho-looking … thing. Durant called him a “conquistador.” As Westbrook walked out of the locker room, he yelled back to Durant, “I got a horse outside!”

In Los Angeles, after a win over the Lakers, Westbrook sported black leather fingerless gloves. Everyone, from teammates to team personnel, had a comment. Westbrook’s response to basically every one of them? “Yeah, I don’t know either, man.”

Since we here at DIME know exactly nothing about fashion but think Westbrook deserves props for his brave sartorial concoctions, we’ll leave you with some of our favorite outfits of the postseason so far.
