Besides being a movie full of hilariously quotable lines, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s 2008 movie Step Brothers is a beautiful story of friendship. A story of two idiots destined to come together and nearly tear their family apart with one jackass stunt after another. If Step Brothers teaches us anything — yes, I know it seems impossible — it’s that making a new best friend is a fantastic feeling that’s to be celebrated. Making new friends as an adult isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but when it happens it’s cause for some garage karate.
So whether you’ve recently found yourself a new buddy or just want to reconnect with an old friend, hopefully, these lines will inspire you both to embark on your own Catalina Wine Mixer.
“Do you like guacamole?” — Dale Doback
There’s nothing more exciting when meeting somebody than realizing that you share common interests. They’re throwing questions at you, you’re throwing questions at them, and all the answers are matching up perfectly. Dale and Brennan might have started out as arch enemies who wished death upon one another, but once they realized they were incredibly alike, it was game on! Unfortunately, Dale and Brennan got so caught up getting to know one another that their bunk-bed renovation project suffered dearly because of it.
“This is going to sound weird, but for a second, I think you took on the shape of a unicorn.” — Dale Doback
Having a best friend is about having unique experiences and sharing insights that you might otherwise be hesitant about. That’s the beauty of having a best friend, though, you can — hopefully — tell them anything, no matter how weird it might sound. Just make sure you’re tight with your new best friend. You don’t wanna go telling just any rando that they look like a mythological beast in your eyes.
“Holy Santa Claus sh*t.” — Brennan Huff
Sometimes your best friend shows you something so badass that you’ve gotta drop a doozy like this one on them. Brennan and Dale spend a large part of the movie trying to one-up each other. And while they may start off as enemies, once they become friends, the showboating takes a much friendlier turn. They’re no longer bragging about their drum kits or Randy Jackson-signed swords out of superiority, but now out of affection. Because if you owned a pair of industrial strength night vision goggles, wouldn’t you want to show them off to your new best friend?
“Your voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.” — Dale Doback
A solid best friend is always going to be there with some solid words of encouragement when you need them most. Brennan had some reservations about showcasing his singing voice — and rightfully so — but once he starts belting out “Let’s Give ’em Something to Talk About,” Dale is right there supporting him. Never mind that Brennan sounds like a 40-year-old man still in the middle of puberty, he’s a heavenly 2000s pop songbird to Dale and the compliments abound.
“I feel like a lightning bolt hit the tip of my penis.” — Brennan Huff
This line probably won’t work its way into your everyday repertoire, but if you can find a way to use it, go for it. Especially when you make an electric connection with another human being that can’t be denied.
“Did we just become best friends?” — Brennan Huff
Obviously, this gem was going to be included because of the title, but it also sums up the realization that comes when you make a new friend. Brennan and Dale didn’t expect to ever be friends — and then wildly unsuccessful business partners — but it was destined to happen. It’s not every day that one discovers they share a favorite dinosaur and admiration for John Stamos and Better Housekeeping. When you finally realize that you have a connection with a new person and it’s the beginning of a new friendship, there’s really only one thing to do…
“Do you wanna go do karate in the garage?” — Brennan Huff
“Yup!” — Dale Doback
Okay, so maybe you and your best friend aren’t game to head to the garage and whack at a bunch of bags of Doritos with a Samurai sword. It’s not the activity that’s important here, it’s just doing something to kick-start the friendship. Maybe that means grabbing drinks, playing a few games of pool, checking out a sports game or just watching an episode of COPS. A friendship needs to be watered if it is to grow, so don’t hesitate about making plans to hang with your new best bud.
Now get out there and roundhouse kick some pumpkins in the garage with your best friend.
