A little over a week removed from the murder of Christina Grimmie comes another heartbreaking news story involving an alum of The Voice franchise.
Singer Alejandro “Jano” Fuentes, a contestant on the first season of Mexico’s La Voz, has been pronounced dead at age 45 after suffering multiple gunshot wounds in Chicago. The Chicago Tribune reports that Fuentes was out celebrating his birthday with friends on Thursday when someone walked up to his car, showed their gun and instructed him to get out of his vehicle. Fuentes refused and was shot three times. He was rushed to hospital, but would succumb to his injuries. According to the Associated Press, police have no suspects in the killing.
The news has come a shock to the friends and colleagues of Fuentes. They spoke glowingly about the late entertainer when interviewed by the Tribune.
“He was a very talented guy — one of a kind,” said Miguel Sanchez, who first worked with Fuentes in Mexico two years ago. Friends of Fuentes had difficulty understanding who would attack a man he considered a mentor.
“That’s why it’s terrible for us, because he didn’t have any enemies, he didn’t have a problem with nobody. He was a gentleman,” Sanchez said.
The senseless killing of Jano Fuentes comes as Chicago continues to deal with a major gun violence problem. Last night, WLS-TV reported that 18 people were shot in weekend violence with six of those victims dying as a result.
