All your precious, precious Star Trek films are beaming out of Netflix streaming at the end of month, so maybe let’s start there. A pair of Stanley Kubrick films will only be available until the first of July, so check those out along with the many accompanying visual essays into his work on YouTube. Team America and Talladega Nights should tickle that little funny bone of yours after dinner, and Reading Rainbow can tuck you in with a story at night. See, your day is planned with Netflix.
Here’s what you should be watching before it leaves this July.
Serenity (2005, 7/16)
Joss Whedon’s Firefly was a great show, and its big-screen Serenity was a fine follow-up and conclusion to the space adventures of Mal and his crew. (Whedon also did some bridging work between the show and the film with a comic-book mini-series.) Even if you haven’t watched the entire season of Firefly, you can still enjoy a pre-Avengers Whedon giving the Western space opera a try.
Rubber (2010, 7/1)
This is one of the strangest films you may ever see: It involves a murderous tire. That’s all I should tell you. Oh… also, it’s directed by the delightfully enigmatic and perverse Quentin Dupieux (Wrong Cops), a musician, artist, and filmmaker. If you like absurd, weird filmmaking, than this is what you’ve come for. Rubber isn’t for everyone, but it’s an enjoyable trip inside the warped mind of Dupieux. The music is pretty great, too.
Best in Show (2000, 7/1)
Christopher Guest is Christopher Guest — you know what you’re getting when his name’s on the marquee, and I mean that in the best of ways. Guest is one of the godfathers of the mockumentary, and Best in Show, set in and around a dog show, is another great title in his filmography. Guest’s standards are there: Catherine O’Hara, Eugene Levy, Michael McKean; the cast is always terrific in his films. That’s all said to say, “Hey, just keep being you, Mr. Guest. You’re awesome.”
