A long time ago (yesterday) in a galaxy not far, far away (this one), we learned that Darth Vader will be in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and that “he’s not the main antagonist.” He is, however, the father. At the time, it was unknown how much of a role he’ll have in the film, but Entertainment Weekly spoke to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who said Rogue One will use Vader “sparingly. But at a key, strategic moment, he’s going to loom large.”
EW also revealed that at the time the movie takes place, roughly 19 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, and 22 years after bitching about sand in Attack of the Clones, the former-Anakin Skywalker isn’t much of a presence in the Empire yet. Vader’s the “muscle. The fixer. And also…the breaker.”
So, he’s The Mountain from Game of Thrones?
“Within the Rebellion, it’s not commonly spoken about,” says director Gareth Edwards. “Within the Empire, there is the culture of knowing of the existence of Darth Vader. There’s definitely an underlying feeling that there is a power – a dark power – available to the Empire and that if you overstep your mark, you will suffer the consequences.” (Via Entertainment Weekly)
Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm’s chief of story development, added, “Vader doesn’t really play by the rules. He’s present in the military structure, but he’s not beholden to it. He’s not accountable to anybody, really, except Palpatine.”
Yup, he’s The Mountain from Game of Thrones, and Palpatine is Cersei. How many eyes will Vader pop? Probably 327. We’ll find out on Dec. 16, 2016.
