Gwyneth Paltrow has always been a polarizing actress and celebrity, to put it nicely, and during a recent interview that aired on the BBC News program Hardtalk this week, host Stephen Sackur decided to ask her just why she thinks that is! Yes, Gwyneth, why does everybody hate you?
For the record, Sackur was referencing a 2013 Star magazine “most hated celebrities” feature, in which Paltrow was voted the most hated celebrity of the year, beating out other hated contenders such as Kristen Stewart, who had just gone through that whole cheating scandal thing; John Mayer who is John Mayer; and Chris Brown, who, well… you know. (For the record, the most recent hated celebrities list is comprised mostly of the Kardashian and Kardashian adjacent.)
Her reaction was about what you’d expect. “I’m the most hated celebrity? More than, like, Chris Brown?” she asked the host. “What did I do?” Sackur was emphatic, telling her that he understood where she was coming from, but lightly suggested that pushing her extravagant lifestyle brand maybe makes people “feel bad sometimes.”
To that point, Gwynnie actually had a fairly reasoned response.
“All I can do is be my authentic self, and if you know me, then you know who I am, and that I have fun and eat and am so appreciative for my life,” Paltrow fired back. “But I think there are things about me that make people draw conclusions.”
I think hate is a strong word, but you can see both sides, here. Gwyneth Paltrow has every right to be her true Gwyneth Paltrow self, but everyone else has every right to make fun of her for not even remotely understanding what it’s like to not be in the one percent. The one time she tried, it was a colossal failure, so maybe better off she just sticks to $200 smoothies, vaginal steaming, and $15,000 gold plated sex toys.
