The ever-complicated 2016 has been the year where protest songs have returned in the wake of both the U.S. Presidential election and the UK’s decision to withdraw from the European Union. The United States saw the formation of Prophets of Rage, featuring members of Rage Against the Machine, Public Enemy, and Cyprus Hill, gearing up just in time to prepare to crash the Republican National Convention. In the UK, trip-hop outfit Massive Attack have turned their attention to Brexit.

According to Mashable, the act was performing on Friday at the British Summer Time Festival in Hyde Park where they delivered a pointedly anti-Brexit message to the audience. The show was played in front of an electronic sign that read “We Are In This Together.”
“As sons of immigrants, we are both very disappointed with the situation,” Robert Del Naja said. “We can’t allow ourselves to fall victim to the populist bullsh*t going on at the moment. We can’t let the bigots and racists back into this situation. It’s bullsh*t.”
The set included an appearance from collaborator Tricky and even playing the 1994 track Eurochild for the audience, with their reasoning being their profound disappointment in the decision for the UK to leave the EU. The song, which details the hardships that both Grand Marshall and Robert Del Naja dealt with growing up in the UK, being unearthed now is a poignant statement by the duo in a message that has been heard loud and clear by fans across the globe.
