Perhaps no one movie has inspired such pure devotion and careful study as Stanley Kubrick’s classic The Shining. Based off of the Stephen King novel of the same name, The Shining has gone down as one of the most iconic films in history, featuring a career-defining performance by Jack Nicholson and Kubrick’s insane attention to detail throughout the entire film. In fact, it’s one of the few films that has influenced entire generations of filmmakers, which is quite a feat.
But the reach and influence of The Shining has extended far beyond the world of filmmaking. Adam Savage, best known from Discovery’s Mythbusters, is one of those who was heavily influenced and obsessive of The Shining, with it driving him to extreme measures. After multiple visits to the travelling Stanley Kubrick Exhibition, he found himself so enraptured with the Overlook hedge maze that he actually made an highly-detailed and accurate scale model that went on to became a part of the exhibit.
The model has “made it home,” so-to-speak, as the Stanley Kubrick Exhibition arrived in San Francisco at the Contemporary Jewish Museum where the exhibition will be on display until October 30th. There is also a video showing how Savage built the model as well as him talking about how he got inspired to tackle the month-long project. The detail in it is quite remarkable, with Savage even claiming there is a hidden Easter egg in the maze for intrepid visitors who want to take the time to study it.
