The Golden State Warriors are in full-on villain mode with Kevin Durant joining their Death Star, whether they choose to embrace or even acknowledge that reality or not. Durant — in this vein, though unaware of it at the time — has been asked about why he’s not got a Bay-based product only affordable for the bourgeoisie.

In a June press conference to officially release the Nike KD9, his ninth signature, Durant was asked about the rapidly climbing prices of his Nike sneakers. The KD2 and KD3 iterations of his shoes cost less than $90, with the most recent KD9 retailing at around $150. “As humbly as I can say it, I’m not a $88 player,” Durant said.

“I’m an elite player in the league. I wanted everything to be affordable, but I knew we had to sacrifice some stuff. I just wanted the fans of the brand and of the shoe to just stay patient with me. And stay patient with who I am as a player, and the level I was trying to go to.”

Durant’s public record has always been a bit inconsistent and full of nuggets some like to criticize, regardless of context. But now that he’s thrown his underdog myth aside and left the dusty, desolate, unloved Oklahoma City desert for the most shiny and Google-like team in the league, expect more vitriol to come his way for words like these.
