The New ‘Tomb Raider’ Movie Will Star A Very Different Lara Croft

When the Tomb Raider video games rebooted in 2013, they took a very different tack. Lara Croft was no longer Indiana Jones with a D-cup and thigh holsters. She was an intellectual thrown into an island hell and the game’s arc was about how a human being, when exposed to constant violence and blood, can break in a multitude of dangerous ways. By the finale, when Lara is screaming bloody vengeance and mowing down her enemies with a shotgun, it’s exhilarating and yet disturbing in equal measure. And that’s what we’ll have to look forward to in the movie!

Speaking to HitFix, Alicia Vikander explains that we’ll be seeing Lara’s origin, and the movie will be closer to the survival thriller tone of the reboot than the lighthearted Indy antics of the Angelina Jolie movies:

You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that’ll stand on its own two legs.

It’ll be interesting to see how far the reboot goes with this. The 2013 Tomb Raider is an excellent game, but it might be tricky to show Lara’s journey from terrified aspiring archaeologist to pistol-wielding avenger in two hours. If anybody can do it, though, it’s Vikander, and we’ll find out in 2018.
