Supposedly, last Friday was the last day — after a year of nudging or outright trickery — that Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users could get a free upgrade to Windows 10. Now, you’re going to have to open your wallet to upgrade. Or will you?
It turns out that Windows 10 upgrades are still free, straight from Microsoft, if you know where to look. The Verge has found that Microsoft still has an update file available for free. Granted, this isn’t entirely ethical, as it’s a free upgrade intended for people who use assistive technologies to interact with computers. On the other hand, Microsoft has, at least on the consumer side, made it abundantly clear they want you running Windows.
Still, if you’re experiencing some remorse for not upgrading, you can just download the .exe file straight from the company and run the upgrade. It’s not clear how long this will be up, although Microsoft has stated they’ll publicly announce when the free upgrade period ends for people with assistive technology. It might make sense to get it now, though, since tomorrow is the big Anniversary Upgrade Microsoft has been hyping for months. It features some major updates, such as a new “digital ink” function that lets you write out notes and draw sketches, and a host of tweaks and fixes that should offer some interesting possibilities.
