Although she did not participate in this year’s Rio Olympics, McKayla Maroney stopped by Good Morning America earlier this week during the morning show’s coverage of the games. Maroney, who has for now retired from gymnastics to pursue a singing career, recently caught the attention of the internet thanks to her sultry Instagram account, which led to the 20-year-old defending herself over accusations of cosmetic surgery.
Following a segment about Olympic game faces, Maroney was asked about her own game face, which launched a thousand internet memes when she won the silver medal during the 2012 London Olympic games.
I wasn’t in the moment thinking, this is a face I’m trying to make. It was a feeling, it was an emotion. And I got back to the village and my dad was like, you might wanna know about everything that’s happening…
She goes on to say that in London, she had no idea what was going on, and was basically blindsided the next day when she had to go on to support her teammates. Four years later, however, Maroney, still has a good sense of humor about the whole thing, and will still do “the face” if asked nicely enough.
We wish McKayla all the luck in the world in her music career or whatever other endeavors she chooses to pursue. But deep down, she’ll always be the face to us.
