Zendaya might be taking on the role of Spider-Man’s red-haired lady love Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. While her involvement in the project was previously shrouded in that trademark Marvel secrecy, we might finally be getting some answers. This is according to The Wrap, which quotes two anonymous sources with knowledge of the project.
Spider-Man fans have been contemplating who Zendaya’s going to portray ever since she signed onto the Spidey reboot alongside British actor Tom Holland. In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said her character would be named “Michelle,” leading some to think she’d be playing the role of Michele Gonzales. However, we’ve seen characters’ true identities hidden in early versions of scripts before to keep them secret, so it’s a “wait and see” type of situation.
Zendaya’s refused to answer questions about her true Spidey identity, but she did say in an interview that her character is “super dry and awkward,” which would work really well for a teenaged Mary Jane. Let’s just hope she isn’t left dangling above a parade in a Chinese dress, because been there, done that.
Spider-Man: Homecoming comes out July 7, 2017.
