Last week, Young Thug promised his new project would arrive “in one to two days” and, even taking in account general rapper tardiness, he did not keep his promise. But, Jeffery is finally here, a week and “one to two days” later. The arrival of the nine-track body of work brings the end of a rather conspicuous promotional cycle.
Thug and his team mostly relied on snippets played on Snapchat or Instagram to get the word out about the tape. That development is not new. Before, his family members, his girlfriend and other members of his entourage would do the dirty work; even Lyor Cohen got into the mix for Slime Season 3. Then, for some reason, Thugger changed his name, kind of. No, My Name Is Jeffery became his new moniker and search engine optimization nightmare for a while, though it doesn’t seem that’ll stick. Finally, he released a “tracklist” that was a bunch of names, and “F*ck Lyor” in Jeffery’s chicken scratch that took more squinting than necessary to decipher. Finally, he released one song, “Elton” with, oddly enough, Wyclef Jean, and that was that.
Each song is titled after someone Thug looks up to, including Future, Boosie, Floyd Mayweather, Rihanna, Webbie, and most amazingly Harambe. Yes, the gorilla. Oh yeah, and “Elton” is now “Kanye West” because, why not? On Travi$ Scott’s Wav radio show, he called the album “personal,” explaining, “It’s album music, you can’t call it a mixtape.”
So after all of that, we finally have Young Thug A.K.A My Name Is Jeffery’s latest LP, featuring guest appearances from Wyclef, Travi$ Scott, Gucci Mane, Quavo, Offset, and more. Jeffery also comes with production from all of Thug’s favorites Wheezy, London On Da Track, Metro Boomin, TM88, and more. And finally, for the Thugger diehards, Jeffery marks the return of Alex Tumay behind the boards, mixing and engineering Thug’s work full-time for the first time since Slime Season 2.
