The goal for the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors, most likely, is to not blow a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals. That almost definitely takes precedence over winning a record 74 regular-season games in 2016-17, but Steph Curry let that be known during his tour of Asia.
“We’ve added some great character guys that will fit right in to our identity and who we are as a team. There’s only one goal this year, and that’s obviously to win a championship, so whatever it takes to make that happen, I’m sure we’ll figure it out. Seventy-four (wins) isn’t really a goal. If it happens, it happens.”
Poor Steph. He’s over in Hong Kong, acting as an ambassador for basketball, and he has to be reminded of how little 73 regular-season wins meant. He has to talk about how he was injured during the NBA Finals, when the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead to the Cavaliers, and get into how he’s going to play with Kevin Durant. Every question is essentially, “Remember that time you blew a 3-1 lead in the Finals?”
“All we care about is a championship,” is just a platitude, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Warriors throttle it down a bit in the regular season, because really, expending all that energy to win 73 couldn’t have helped in June.
