In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg team up to stop Steppenwolf from taking over Earth, and Jared Leto from weaseling his way into their movie. In real life, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, and Ray Fisher got together to take on a more pressing issue than a fictional super-villain with the same name as a 1960s rock band. The cast appeared in a video to promote Rezpect Our Water, a group that opposes the Dakota Access Pipeline, which would “plow through land that may contain Standing Rock Sioux Tribe burial sites.” It would also contaminate the tribe’s drinking water.
“As a gang of Earth defenders,” Miller says, “we want to send a big shoutout to the Oceti Sakowin [the proper name for the Sioux] and those who stand with them in opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline.” They also ask that you sign the Change.org petition against the pipeline, which reads, “Native American people know that water is the first medicine not just for us, but for all human beings living on this earth.” There are 260,000 signatures and counting.
The private oil company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline is but one enemy. The other? Anyone who tells Khal Drogo to wear a shirt.
