Kurt Russell is playing (spoiler alert) Chris Pratt’s absentee father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Rather than the dad from the comics (J’Son), Star-Lord’s dad in the James Gunn version is Ego the living planet, who can take human form, and about whom Russell assured people in a scene screened at the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 panel at San Diego Comic Con: “I have a penis. It’s not bad either.”
Kurt Russell spoke a bit about working for Marvel in an interview with Fandango at the Toronto International Film Festival. Besides heaping praise on Chris Pratt (who got him the job) and James Gunn, Russell also spoke a bit about the relationship dynamics between Star-Lord and his dad, saying, “Kids always put their parents on a pedestal. Well, what happens when they don’t turn out to be the people you want them to be?” (That’s an easy one; you drink.)
So does Ego reconcile with his son well enough to stick around for more movies, or does he duck out to “buy a pack of cigarettes”? Russell remained vague about his future at Marvel, telling Fandango, “You have to sit down and say, these are my issues — these are my questions. I’m an audience too. We all run into our own integrity no matter what, as much as I hate to admit it. I need to find a way that this is going to grow and be fun and, most of all for me, it needs to be fun to find as we go along. Right now I got part of it — we have to see. I don’t know. I don’t know if I fit into that mold.”
We’re hoping he fits into that mold, if for no other reason than to eventually see Ego the living planet have a scene with Tony Stark. So much ego in one room.
