Ten years ago, 20th Century Fox rather reluctantly released Mike Judge’s satirical comedy Idiocracy in a handful of theaters across the country. Even without any support whatsoever from the studio, the film has gone on to become a huge cult success that some feel is starting to resemble reality these days. It seems like not a month goes by without another Idiocracy prediction coming true … an extra sad occurrence considering we weren’t supposed to get this dumb for another 490 years.
The movie seems extra apt as we continue to wade our way through the sigh-inducing mess that is the 2016 US elections. And while 20th Century Fox ended up blocking Mike Judge and Idiocracy co-star Terry Crews from making election commercials that mocked presidential candidate Donald Trump, they can’t stop Alamo Drafthouse Theaters from celebrating the movie’s ten year anniversary with special showings across the United States on October 4th. From the Alamo’s website:
We are approaching the end of the most bizarre, absurdist presidential race in U.S. history. Over the past months, thousands have questioned in social media whether IDIOCRACY was actually a documentary. Mike Judge’s sadly prescient film has transcended its cult classic status to become a vibrant and essential facet of this election conversation.
The Alamo Drafthouse, along with the network of Arthouse Convergence Theaters and local League of Women Voters chapters, want to invite everyone to revisit and rediscover IDIOCRACY on the eve of the 2016 presidential election.
For those unfortunate enough not to have an Alamo or affiliated theater in their region, the post-movie Q&A with director Mike Judge and co-star Maya Rudolph in Santa Monica will be livestreamed on the Alamo’s Facebook page for all to watch, and questions can be asked via Twitter using the hashtag #IdiocracyToday. You can also buy a special Mondo Tees Idiocracy shirt with proceeds benefiting the League of Women Voters. Does really, really wanting an ‘Ouch My Balls’ shirt mean we’re missing the point?
