Will Forte Is Working On The Sequel To His Cult Classic ‘MacGruber’

It’s been a rough couple of months for movie fans. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were highly anticipated disappointments; The Nice Guys and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping didn’t make as much money as they deserved to; and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is a real thing. We could use some good news ri-… [giant fireball explosion] MacGruber 2 is happening.

On Monday, Jorma Taccone, one-third of The Lonely Island, announced on Twitter that MacGruber, a movie based on Will Forte’s SNL sketch based on an action show from the 1980s (that was a remake for a slick, smirking generation), is getting a sequel. Julia Sweeney continues to wait for that It’s Pat Again call.

Back in 2015, Forte, who’s been nominated for an Emmy two years in a row for his work on The Last Man on Earth, told Splitsider that even after MacGruber bombed at the box office (it didn’t even make its $10 million budget back), he and Taccone still wanted to write a sequel. “We didn’t care what people thought,” Forte said. “We loved it, and we loved the group and just thought, let’s find a way to make it even if it’s just ultra low-budget. We never stopped talking about it and we would always get together and start writing little pieces of it, and we probably have an outline that’s about two-thirds written that’s pretty in-depth.” Apparently they have enough for a “super duper rough” script, most of which is “INTERIOR: things go boom.”

Now how about that Falconer movie?
