Prince‘s untimely death earlier this year left fans not only heartbroken, but also confounded on what was to become of all the icon’s unreleased music. The musical legend left behind an enormous vault of unheard tunes, the fate of which has been very unclear since his tragic passing.
Rumors of the music being put up for sale proliferated throughout the media and some even speculated the songs would simply remain prisoner, never to see the light of day. However, it has finally been announced that the legend’s mysterious vault is slowly beginning to open.
NPG Records and Warner Bros. just confirmed two new Prince albums are on the way, both containing music from the vault.
The first, set to be released on November 22nd, is primarily a “greatest hits” style record entitled, Prince 4Ever. However, in addition to boasting iconic tracks including “Little Red Corvette,” “When Doves Cry” etc, Prince 4Ever will possess a previously unreleased song called “Moonbeam Levels.” According to a statement by Warner Bros., the track was recorded in 1982 during the sessions for Prince’s fifth studio album, 1999. The impending album is also set to contain a booklet featuring never before seen photos taken by the legendary fashion photographer, Herb Ritts.
The second album, (and honestly the more exciting of the two) will be a remastered, deluxe version of Purple Rain. Slated to be released in early 2017, a press release revealed the album will utilize plans that were “agreed [upon] with Prince before he passed away.” What makes the Purple Rain reissue perhaps more thrilling than the album set to precede it is that it will also “arrive with a second album of previously unreleased material.”
Details of that project are still emerging, but since it’s Prince we’re talking about, it’s safe to assume the mythical music will live up to every astronomical expectation.
