Guillermo del Toro says a lot of things. He makes a lot of deals. He probably gets paid a lot of money. What he doesn’t do, however, is follow through very often. His is a name you’ll hear constantly in the trade news, but in the last seven years, he’s released ONE (1) movie (Hellboy 2) with another, Pacific Rim, due this summer. If you were only basing del Toro’s output on the number of projects he’s been attached to over the years, you’d think he was the most prolific guy in Hollywood. Here’s just a SAMPLING of the projects he’s been attached to over the years, none of which have come to fruition yet:
Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson; An adaptation of Drood; Another Frankenstein adaptation; another Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde adaptation; another version of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five; a stop-motion remake of Roald Dahl’s The Witches; a movie based on the Oni Press comic book The Coffin; an adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo called The Left Hand of Darkness; Meat Market: A Love Story; Disney’s Haunted Mansion; an adaptation of Domu, a graphic novel created by Katsuhiro Otomo; another version of Van Helsing with Tom Cruise attached; a move based on At the Mountains of Madness; Hellboy 3; Trollhunters; a new Hulk TV series; Crimson Peak, a TV movie based on his Strain; a Pinocchio movie; an adaptation of the British series, Champions; his version of Peter Pan; and, of course, The Hobbit.
That’s at least 20 projects that del Toro has been attached to, but has whiffed on, so when an announcement that del Toro is making a television show for HBO called Monster, you’ll understand why I might be a little skeptical. In fact, I’m half convinced that del Toro is in business with Nikki Finke. He and Ghostbusters 3 rumors practically keep that site in business.
ANYWAY, the series he may be making is based on Japanese Manga, according to Deadline:
HBO and Guillermo del Toro are teaming on Monster, developing a potential series culled from a series of 18 volumes of Japanese Manga by author Naoki Urasawa published by Shogakukan Inc. Del Toro will co-write the story with Steven Thompson, best known for his work on Dr. Who and Sherlock. Thompson will write the pilot, which del Toro intends to direct. The thriller is about the worldwide search by a young doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived. He is a 12-year-old boy, and the doctor’s decision to save his life has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s Box that leaves the doc battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.
So, you know: Look for that soon. Or more likely never.
