The Farrelly Brothers have a history of incorporating famous professional athletes into their films, from Cam Neely as Sea Bass in Dumb & Dumber to Roger Clemens as Skidmark in Kingpin, so it would make sense that the once-royalty siblings of the gross-out comedy genre would not only return to the well with Dumb and Dumber To, but they’re also bringing another athlete along for the ride. Specifically, Texas Rangers pitcher and funnyman Derek Holland Tweeted the above image of his encounter with the film’s star, Jim Carrey, while the Farrelly Brothers spilled the beans on why he was there.

According to Dallas News, Holland will appear in the upcoming sequel’s opening scene, but this wasn’t something that was actually planned.
“I was just going out there to have fun,” Holland said. “And next thing I know, they were like, ‘We’re going to actually put you in the movie and you’re going to be in the opening scene. As far as the day went, it was unbelievable, out and about with Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, having an unbelievable time. … I don’t really want to say too much except for keep your expectations high cause this movie is seriously going to be funny.”
Man, it better be. Like I wrote when discussing the hilarious and everlasting Kingpin, it’s hard to pinpoint when exactly the Farrellys fell off, but they clearly haven’t had the same edge or relevance in a long, long time. The same can even be said for Carrey, so this sequel is still a huge eyebrow-raiser. But Holland has proven that he’s great at impersonating impressions and he’s familiar with the original Dumb & Dumber, so maybe he’ll at least make the opening scene worthwhile.
