Movie power rankings: Golden Globes kick award season into overdrive

It’s that time of year again when Movie Power Rankings is less about superheroes and summer tentpoles and focuses instead on awards shows and film festivals, but there’s still room for the arthropodal antics of Spider-Man and Ant-Man. Just days before cleaning up at the Oscar nominations (MPR is prepared early in the week), “American Hustle” and “12 Years a Slave” came out on top at the Golden Globe Awards, winning best comedy/musical and best drama, respectively. Meanwhile, “Gravity” is still going strong as well. Which of them will take home the most Oscars in March?

As for the rest of this week’s list…

3. “Star Wars Episode VII”  (Last week: Not ranked)
“Friday Night Lights” and “Breaking Bad” vet Jesse Plemons is reportedly circling an unspecified role in JJ Abrams’ upcoming new trilogy. Is he Luke Skywalker, Jr.?
4. Sundance Film Festival  (Last week: Not ranked)
The annual indie movie orgy is underway in Park City, Utah, and the stars are out in force, including Kristen Stewart, Aaron Paul, Miles Teller, Robert Redford, and more.

5. “Ant-Man”  (Last week: Not ranked)
Michael Douglas has joined Edgar Wright’s Marvel movie as original Ant-Man Hank Pym, while Paul Rudd will playing a newer incarnation of the teeny-tiny hero.
6. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”  (Last week: No. 3)
Three new posters show Spidey (Andrew Garfield) and Electro (Jamie Foxx) engaged in mortal combat high above Times Square. Look out below.

7. Cannes Film Festival  (Last week: Not ranked)

“The Piano” auteur Jane Campion — the sole female Palme D’Or winner —  will head the 2014 jury.

8. “Trainwreck”  (Last week: Not ranked)
Comic Amy Schumer will star in director Judd Apatow’s latest comedy, which will open in the very crowded summer of 2015. Will audiences welcome an alternative to all the big-budget mayhem of “The Avengers 2,” “Man of Steel 2,” “Ant-Man” and “Jurassic World”?

9. “Veronica Mars”  (Last week: No. 2)
The crowd-sourced movie update will premiere at Austin’s SXSW Festival.
10. Meryl Streep (Last week: Not ranked)
The Oscar fave publicly slammed “Saving Mr. Banks” subject Walt Disney as a “gender bigot” with “racist proclivities.” We’re guessing Streep won’t be asked to be in “Saving Mr. Banks 2: Save Harder.”
