You already knew that Gregg Popovich and Tim Duncan have a special relationship. Why else would Pop go out of his way to leave carrot cake at Duncan’s hotel room door when they were on road trips. It’s also clear that the famously-acerbic coach is having a hard time coming to terms with Duncan’s retirement. It’s why he keeps threatening to fine the future Hall of Famer for every day he doesn’t show up to work.
So when a reporter asked Pop recently whether he still stays in contact with his Hall-of-Fame-bound big man, of course he had the perfect response:
“Oh sure,” he said. “We’re, like, in love. We text all the time.”
A reporter then asked whether they use emojis.
“Like the ones where you blow kisses? You guys make me say these things.”
Popovich continues to be the GOAT of turning a banal, mundane line of inquiry into comedy gold. The Spurs have started off the season strong at 5-2, and even without Duncan they still are a tough out in the Western Conference. But if we ever catch Pop looking at his phone, there’s a good chance he’ll be texting Timmy.
