We haven’t seen Sasha since The Walking Dead premiere (she, along with Maggie, was MIA in the show’s return to Alexandria this week). We don’t know how either Sasha or Maggie is taking the the loss of Abraham and Glenn, but we can assume that both are not doing well.
At least Maggie could take the smallest bit of consolation in the fact that Glenn was able to garble out a few final words before Negan crushed his head in with Lucille in the seventh season premiere. “I will find you,” Glenn told Maggie. ‘I’ll find you, I’ll be with you, I’ll watch over you. I’ll be there.’” Steven Yeun added on The Talking Dead with his own interpretation. “He dies in such a Glenn way. Still not thinking about himself. It’s important the he puts those final words out as a way of saying, ‘Look out for one another.’”
Less focus, however, was paid to Sasha’s loss. Obviously, Sasha and Abraham weren’t as connected. They had not spent almost the entire zombie apocalypse together. They weren’t married. Sasha wasn’t pregnant with Abraham’s baby. In fact, the romantic relationship between Abraham and Sasha was in its nascent stages when Abraham was killed. But I think he still loved Sasha, and I think that Sasha cared deeply for Abraham, which makes a tiny moment that many viewers missed in the season premiere all the more heartbreaking:
It was subtle, but it was there: Abraham flashed Sasha the double deuces, a peace sign loaded with meaning for Abraham and Sasha.
Michael Cudlitz expanded on that heartbreaking moment in a conference call, as reported by The Huffington Post.
“The peace sign was something that ran with Abraham and Sasha throughout the whole series. This sort of unspoken very loaded peace sign … Going back into it, we had to figure out a way that he could basically tell Sasha that everything was going to be OK and to say goodbye, and that was what we came up with. For those who caught it, I think it’s highly, highly effective.”
So, for those still wondering where Sasha is right now, she’s probably still grieving, but regaining her strength and resolve, thinking about Abraham’s final message to her, and plotting her revenge on Negan. I hope that ultimately Maggie gets to slash Negan’s throat, but when she does, that Sasha gets to hold his neck back.
Meanwhile, the double deuces continue live on through another character on The Walking Dead, Jerry!
Jerry is just delightful. Absolutely delightful. Deuces ✌😂 #TheWalkingDead
