Actor Peter Vaughan, best known for his role as Maester Aemon on HBO’s Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 93. “This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning,” his agent wrote in a statement. “He died peacefully with his family around him.”
Like many British actors on Game of Thrones, Vaughan — who was born Peter Olm and served in World War II — had a long, distinguished career before joining the Night’s Watch. His first role was in 1954’s Stage by Stage, and he made his big-screen debut five years later in the remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps. Vaughan also appeared in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil and Time Bandits, Frank Oz’s Death at a Funeral (where he co-starred with Peter Dinklage), and the acclaimed sitcom Porridge. His final role was blind Maester Aemon, Daenerys’ great-uncle who passed away in season five. Aemon’s dying words: “Egg, I dreamed that I was old.”
Bryan Cogman, a producer and writer on Game of Thrones, tweeted, “Rest in Peace to our own Maester Aemon, Peter Vaughan, who passed away this morning at age 93. Truly an honor to have known him.” To quote the Maester himself, “We could spend all night trading tales of lost loves. Nothing makes the past a sweeter place to visit than the prospect of imminent death.”
