Craig Sager’s battle with terminal cancer has caused the sporting world to take stock of just how much he means to them, and the answer has come back as a rousing, “a whole damn lot.” Tributes and encouraging gestures have flowed consistently as Sager fights the ravaging disease, but the latest one might have even been bestowed if he was 100 percent healthy: he’s been inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Sager joins the Hall as part of a class that includes Verne Lundquist, retiring from football this season, the legendary Robin Roberts, herself a cancer survivor, and former longtime MLB color guy Tim McCarver.
Sager is as well-liked as it gets in the business, but we’re still pretty sure that the voters would have waited longer if Sager wasn’t dealing with cancer. He’s not exactly an elder statesman in a business where the greats regularly continue into their 70’s, but it’s great that they’re making sure Craig can enjoy the accolades while he’s still with us. Of course, with luck Craig will be able to bask in his achievements for years to come. It’s just important to get as much appreciation out for the man as we can.
